Mission Statement
The Chino High School Counseling Program is committed to the success of every student by providing innovative and compassionate service in an environment of mutual respect. Our mission is to provide quality counseling and education to empower all students to be successful academically, vocationally and personally.

Your counselor is available to help you with academic, personal/social and career concerns. Appointments are available and counselors also welcome drop in visits during lunch and after school.

Junior Class "College Search" Workshop
The counselors will be presenting a few workshops for juniors who want to start the college search process. Stop by the Career Center by Friday, 5/18 to sign up for this informative workshop. The Cal State application, UC application, the Common App (private college), and other helpful websites will be explored.

Western Undergraduate Exchange Program
Are you interested in experiencing an "out of state" college program? Would you like to pay "in state" tuition at an out of state school? If so, check out http://wiche.edu/wue for a list of participating states. Many of the states have schools that are not "impacted" and can help you graduate in the traditional four year period.

GATE Night Event
Thank you to all who attended our first ever "GATE Night." GATE Night was our first event planned for parents and students. 8th grade through seniors attended the dinner and recognition event. Valedictorians, Salutatorian, Boys and Girls State representatives, and the American Mathematic Competition top scorers were recognized for their achievements.

Guest speakers included District GATE Director Mr. Hampton, Virtual School Teacher Mrs. Hancock, and Cal Poly Talent Search Advisor Ms. Chavez. Superintended Joseph and School Board member Mr. Naa were also present to meet with students and parents. Handouts to help our students find the right summer programs, the right colleges, and scholarship opportunitites were available. Dinner was provided by our own terrific Foods program!

American Mathematics Competition
The participants of our first group of competitors were treated to a lunch prepared by our own Foods department! Congratulations to all and a big congratulations to top scorers Amanda Te (AMC 10) and Doris Xu (AMC 12).

College Awareness Week
College Awareness Week is going strong! UC Berkeley, Cal State San Bernardino, USC are a few of the colleges who have had representatives visiting in our classrooms this week. Daily trivia question winners include Cathering Truong and Matt Bonilla. On Tuesday, a speaker from Princeton Review presented important college information and advice to our juniors. Thursday night, a presenter will meet with junior students and parents to discuss "The Path to College." Finally, on Friday we will celebrate our teachers and their alma maters. All students and staff are encouraged to wear College attire. A door decorating contest will also take place.
Engineering Program
Cal State L.A. is offering the opportunity to attend engineering classes for selected high school students. Please see your counselor or Ms. Prescott in the Career Center for information and an application.
Summer School Opportunities
Seniors: If you failed a course, see your counselor to sign up for summer school to help you earn your diploma.
Juniors: You may take a summer school course if you received a grade of "F" in a course. If you have a GPA below 2.0, you may make up "D" grades as well. Summer School will be offered at Don Lugo High School.
All: If you want to take a class but don't meet the above pre-requisites, you may be interested in "Virtual Summer School" courses. Each course is $175.00. See your counselor for information.
All: The Mt. SAC High School Referral Program is now accepting applications for summer school. These courses require attendance four days a week at Mt. SAC. See your counselor for an application and information.
Decision Making Workshop
Students: A "decision making" workshop will be offered on March 22nd for students. This workshop will help students recognize the value of taking a moment to "think before they act" as a means to making smarter and more rational decisions. Students will gain insight on how to make decisions using logic over feelings and emotions. Food will be provided. Chino Experience Teen Center - 13001 Central Ave., Chino. 5 - 6 p.m. Call to reserve your spot: 517-3700.

American Mathematics Competition
Congratulations to the 50 students who participated in the 2/22 math competition. Students were treated to snacks provided by our parent organization - CHAPPS! The test was challenging but we are confident our students did great. Students who score very high will have the opportunity to participate in further math competitions...leading to the Math Olympics. Top Chino High performers: AMC 12: Doris Xu, AMC 10: Amanda Te!

All participants were invited to a lunch on Friday, March 30th.

PSAT/PLAN Results
Parents and students: If you took the practice SAT or practice ACT last October, meetings were held to review your results. If you missed your review meeting, please make an appointment with your counselor. It is very important to review your practice results to help you do better when you take the real SAT or ACT this spring.
FAFSA/CAL GRANT
Seniors: If you are applying to a community college, it is NOT too late to apply for financial aid. Make an appointment with your counselor to review these important financial aid documents.
Course Requests for Next Year
Parents and Students: Counselors are meeting with all students to plan next year's schedules. Parents should be reviewing the courses that the student is selecting and should sign the yellow copy of the form. Students need to return the signed, yellow copy to the Counseling Office immediately.
Freshmen: Week of 2/20
Sophomores: Week of 3/19
Juniors: Week of 4/16

City of Chino Teen Program
Are you a freshmen who needs help to improve your classroom success?Are you an older student who has failed some classes and are worried about graduating? Would you like a mentor to help you with tutoring, help you prepare for a job or college and even find resources to help out your family? The City of Chino has a new program just for you! Stop by and see your counselor for more information and to sign up for this support.
Freshman Guidance Lesson
Counselors have met with all freshnmen on 2/22 and 2/23 to review CSF (honor roll) and to complete registration for sophomore year. Parents: be on the lookout for the registration form after 2/22. Your approval for course selection is required! Counselors also emphasized good grades and reviewed college admission information and high school graduation requirements.

Counselors and Counselors-in-training met with all freshmen students on Tuesday - Thursday, 10/25-10/27. A presentation regarding "Tips for High School Success and College/Career Preparation" was provided through the Freshmen Transition Class.
Tutoring
Students: if you need help with any subject, tutoring is available! Please meet a tutor in the Career Center, after school on Tuesday and Wednesday or Friday before school in the library (late start days only). See your counselor or Ms. Morar if you have any questions.
Senior Guidance Lesson
All seniors met with counselors on Tuesday, 10/18 via their English class to discuss graduation and college admissions requirements. Financial aid and searching for scholarships were also discussed. Each senior has received his/her transcript and should review it for accuracy. Seniors should have a minimum of 165 credits at this time. If the student or parent has any questions regarding graduation and/or college admissions, it is important to set up a meeting with the counselor as soon as possible.

Instant Grade Check
Parents: Are you concerned about your child's progress? If so, print out an "Instant Grade Check" from the FORMS section at the bottom of this page. Your child can take this to his/her teachers once a week. If the grade is below your expectation, contact the teacher immediately. Extra help can be provided.
PSAT/PLAN
Juniors and sophomores who took the PLAN/PSAT: A meeting to review your results will be set in December or January. Please listen for the announcement and/or come back to this site for date/time of the recap meeting. It is important to review your results so you can better prepare for the real SAT or ACT you will take at the end of junior year.

Where Are They Now?
Class of 2010 graduate Adrian Tovar recently visited Chino High. He enjoyed his freshmen year at St. John's University in New York. He is a psychology major. We are proud of you Adrian!

Chino High Valedictorian (2007) Kelsey Cook was thrilled to be accepted to New York University. She found that this was one of the few universities to offer her desired major. Way to go Kelsey!

Sophomore Career Exploration lessson
During the fall, Counselors will meet with all sophomores via their World History classes to explore careers. How should students pick their future careers so that they match their talents and interests? Students will determine their "Holland Code." Freshman Classroom Presentations
Counselors in the Classroom.
During November, counselors visited with all freshmen in the Freshmen Transition classes. Counselors provided instruction on graduation requirements and college admission requirements. Students evaluated sample transcripts to determine if the sample "student" was on track for graduation and would be admitted to a university. Parents: ask your child about this activity.

During Spring, counselors will review the California Scholarship Federation guidelines (honor roll). All freshmen will receive their own transcripts and will be given a CSF application to complete. Parents: ask your child if they are eligible for CSF.
Freshmen Four Year Plan Meeting
Freshmen Parent/Student Night - September 28th.
Thank you to all the parents and students who attended the meeting. Those present had the opportunity to hear important tips to create a successful high school experience. Topics discussed included: the high school four year schedule , preparing for college acceptance, looking for scholarships, SAT testing and other topics. If you missed this meeting, we encourage you to call our office and set up a meeting with the counselor. Please call 627-7351, ext. 3430 and ask for an appointment for a "four year plan." You may also view the power point presentation listed at the bottom of this page.

Senior Parent Night
Senior Night Presentation: A meeting was held for our senior parents (and students too) on September 21st. The Chino High Counselors presented important information regarding college admission deadlines, the financial aid process and scholarship timelines.  The 2011 power point is available on this site.

CSU and UC deadlines: Nov. 30th is the deadline for applications. Some Cal States may be accepting applications after this date...go to www.csumentor.edu to check availability. Remember to ask a trusted individual (counselor, teacher, parent) to review your personal statements/essays/applications. Your goal is to turn in an application that is accurate and truly represents you!

Private Colleges: Deadlines for these applications vary. Please refer to the website for important dates.

US Service Academy Information
There are five US Service Academies which include the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs,  the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and the Coast Guard Academy at New london, CT.

Seniors: Applications are usually due to Congressman Miller by November.

The Senate will probably accept applications for the 2011 entering class in October. Application instructions can be be found on the web site of Senator Barbara Boxer: http://boxer.senate.gov/en/services/academy/index.cfm.  Students who apply for an appointment to a Service Academy must receive a Congressional nomination. Students residing in California may apply for a nomination from either of their two Senators, or their member of the House of Represenatives. For more information, call: 909-888-8528.
IVY League Schools
Interested in learning about Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn or Stanford? Visit www.exploringcollegeoptions.org for parent/student information sessions. 

College Preparation and Outreach Opportunities
Chino High has a variety of special programs to help students become prepared for college acceptance. Please make an appointment with your counselor for more information.
Cal Poly Talent Search: Any student in grades 9-12 who will be the first in the family to attend a university and/or is enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program can participate in a program to prepare for college admission.
Pomona Summer Scholars Program: High achieving 9th grade students were invited to apply for a summer program held at the Pomona College campus.
USC/La Curacao Mentorship Program: Students with a GPA of 3.4 or higher are invited to apply for this program. Students meet with USC students on a monthly basis to prepare for college.
Bright Prospect Scholar Program: High achieving, modest income junior students are encouraged to apply for this program. Bright Prospect scholars receive mentorship during junior summer and senior year. Students are encouraged to apply to private, out of state universities in addition to local schools.
AVID:  Students who are motivated to excel, may be the first in their family to attend a university are encouraged to consider the AVID program. This is an elective class that the student attends each day.
UC summer programs/Private college summer programs: Many local schools offer special summer programs. Costs vary. Programs are designed for high achieving students. See Mrs. Stone in the Career Center for more information.
Mt. SAC/Chaffey College: Students who have completed 10th grade, have a GPA of 2.5 or higher can take college courses free of charge if the student lives in the college zone. See Mrs. Stone in the Career Center for more information.
Financial Aid/Scholarship News

A scholarship bulletin is available each month. See Ms. Stone in the Career Center for the most recent bulletin. The largest "Local Scholarship" bulletin will be available during spring semester.
Counselors in the Classroom!
The counselors will provide guidance lessons for students. Topics will include:
Freshmen:
Counselors will cover transcript review and determine what it takes to meet all graduation requirements and college entrance requirements. Sophomores: Counselors will help all sophomores explore the California Career Zone website. Students will evaluate their career interests and learn what education is required to meet their goals. Juniors: Counselors will be guiding all juniors in exploring the SAT/ACT /College search websites in preparation for senior year. Seniors: Seniors, during fall, will be instructed on the Cal State, UC and private college application process, financial aid forms, and will review graduation requirements.
